"keeping santa cruz weird"...is the motto of all and the earnest endeavor of a few. It is mostly not weird, rather it is creative, inventive, and real.
Riding on the road! New concept

BIKE-FRIENDLY DOWNTOWN
A cyclist cheers as she rides down the newly opened contraflow bicycle lane on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz on Tuesday.
The opening of the lane was celebrated with a ribbon cutting and speeches from several city officials who hope that the new lane will eliminate the need for riding on sidewalks.

Psychic story on A1 ridiculous
Regarding the page A1 headline, "Live Oak psychic Susie Stevens debunks doomsday predictions for Dec. 21, 2012," complete with three column story, photo and (presumably as a public service) the psychic's phone number. I burst out laughing. We're not suppose to believe bizarre interpretations of the Mayan calendar because a psychic tells us not to? Please, guys, this is embarrassing. Keeping Santa Cruz weird is one thing; outright idiocy is another.

Ecological, Sustainable Bank Heist
SANTA CRUZ -- A bicyclist held up a Westside bank during the lunch hour Monday, then pedaled away and eluded officers, Santa Cruz police reported.
The robber walked into the Comerica Bank on the 1900 block of Mission Street just before 1 p.m. with his white bike helmet on and gave a teller a note demanding cash. The note also threatened that the robber was armed with a gun, according to police spokesman Zach Friend.
No gun was seen, police said.
The robber, who had a black messenger bag, fled with an undisclosed amount of money. Witnesses told police they last saw him cycling south on Dufour Street.

Nice Ride
Saw a guy today at Opal Cliffs with a motorized skateboard. He used a remote to control it. Pretty speedy ride considering. It even had a tail light.
