The University of California has grown and matured into an academic body of stature and gravitas providing cutting edge research in engineering, science, digital media as well as a world class Shakespearean company and theater.

Land of Arts and Artists

The Atlantic Magazine survey resulted in a list of the top artistic cities in the USA and Santa Cruz made the top five next to New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Santa Fe. They only measured painters but they didn't skew it to population size so we easily made the cut...had they counted all arts we would have been on top.
